WCW Monday Nitro: Episode #2
Monday, November 16th, 2020
State Farm Arena: Atlanta, Georgia
Welcome to WCW Monday Nitro! We are welcomed by WCW’s broadcast team of Jim Ross, Mike Tenay and Tony Schiavone who hype tonight’s episode of Nitro, where we will see Nick Aldis defend his WCW World Heavyweight Championship in our Main Event, as well as Eric Bischoff’s decision on who Nick Aldis’ next challenger for his title will be at WCW upcoming PPV, WW3!
Our broadcast is officially under way with an appearance from the WCW Champion himself, Nick Aldis! Aldis is flanked by Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa and Candice LeRae as the 4 make their way to the ring together. Wanting to get right down to business, Aldis explains that a true Champion will take on any challenge at any time, but a true businessman will always have his best interests in mind, which is why he is not only an extraordinary Champion, but an excellent businessman as well. Aldis states that Gargano and Ciampa were more than happy to offer their services to him in exchange for an opportunity to get their hands on The Young Bucks, who just so happened to win the WCW Tag Team Championships earlier that night, which made their business arrangement event more intriguing. Aldis tells the Bucks that DIY are gunning for those WCW Tag Team Championships, but most importantly, they’re coming for them, because as Aldis puts it “You may be The Elite, but we…..we are The Superior!”
Just then, the music of The Young Bucks plays as the WCW Tag Team Champions come out to the stage without Marty Scurll though, who is noticeably absent. The Bucks congratulate Aldis on his recent purchase of a Thesaurus which they credit as the reason Aldis selected their new team name before turning their attention to Gargano and Ciampa and asking why they believe they’re next in line for a title shot. Matt Jackson is ready to accept their challenge tonight, but it’s Nick who steps in and questions what this would say about the tag division if they just let these guys walk in and take the front of the line. This draws a mixed reaction from the crowd who although they agree with Nick’s statements, are unhappy to not be getting a match between these two teams tonight.
The music of WCW President Eric Bischoff then plays as he quickly makes his way out to the stage, standing alongside (though socially distancing) The Young Bucks. Bischoff takes a moment to applaud Matt Jackson for proving to be a fighting Champion, before telling him that he agrees with his brother Nick. DIY cannot just walk in to the company and demand to be put next in line for a shot at any title, just because of an agreement made with Nick Aldis to bring them here. Bischoff takes a moment to remind Aldis that he may be the Champion, but Eric Bischoff is the only one around here who can make the matches. Bichoff tells DIY they have a rather long and impressive history as a tag team, which does deserve some credit, before telling them that a shot at the tag titles needs to be earned, thus he is booking DIY to take on MexiBlood later tonight! He then turns his attention back to Nick Aldis, reminding him that he also has a match tonight and he’ll be putting that WCW Championship on the line against a man who is back tonight after taking some time off, he’s angry, he’s focused, and he’s hungrier than ever…..
Jon Moxley makes his way to the stage as the crowd goes crazy, welcoming back one of their favourites who hasn’t been seen in a few months. The once confident look on the face of Nick Aldis has now been replaced with a look of shock and slight worry, as The Young Bucks laugh at his misfortune from the top of the stage. With that, we head to our first commercial break of the evening.

As we return form commercial, Charly Caruso is standing by with the New WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Santos Escobar. Charly congratulates Escobar on winning the Fatal 4-Way last week to become the first WCW Cruiserweight Champion, and asks him how he feels. Escobar is humble in victory, stating that growing up in Mexico, the Luchadore scene in WCW was something he admired, even going so far as to start his career under a Lucha mask himself. Escobar says he’s always dreamed of becoming Cruiserweight Champion and promises to bring glory and prestige to this title like the Legends of WCW have before him. Just then, Jay Lethal appears on camera. Lethal shakes Escobar’s hand and congratulates him, telling him that he thought he was so close to becoming champion himself. Escobar credits Lethal, but reminds him to always be aware of his surroundings in any match. The two men share a laugh before things gets serious again, when Lethal proposes a challenge for next week, asking Escobar to put the Cruiserweight Championship on the line against him in his first defense. Escobar pauses for a moment before agreeing to the challenge, and Lethal says he’ll go talk to Bischoff about making the match official. Both men then shake hands and head off in opposite directions.
Match #1: Singles Match
Billie Kay (w/ Peyton Royce) vs. Rhea Ripley
Another week, another loss for Billie Kay as this week it’s Rhea Ripley who gets the opportunity to shine against the IIconic member. Royce watches on in comedic agony as he best friend is easily beaten by Ripley in decisive fashion as Ripley puts Kay away with the Riptide for the pinfall victory.
Winner: Rhea Ripley by pinfall @ 5:33.
We head backstage to see Buddy Murphy walking out of the locker room. He looks left, then right before walking out of view of the camera. The camera then pans in on the nameplate of the door that was being blocked by Murphy, which reads “Motor City Machine Guns”.
Match #2: Tag Team Match
DIY (w/ Candice LeRae) vs. MexiBloods (w/ Rey Horus)
The official in-ring debut of Gargano and Ciampa is not an easy one as they take on the runners up in the WCW Tag Team Championship Tournament. This is a solid back and forth match where both teams put on quite a clinic in terms of showcasing their own talents as they’re given quite some time to do so. As the match wears on, DIY start to take more control of the momentum, as Ciampa begins working down Flamita with frequent tags to his partner Gargano. A miscommunication from DIY allows Flamita to make the hot tag to Bandido, who begins to clear house, firing up the crowd and putting MexiBlood back in to control. The end of the match comes after the match spills to the outside, where during the commotion, it appears that Rey Horus may have accidentally struck Candice LeRae who is down and hurt on the outside. This distracts both Bandido and the referee as Gargano races to the aid of his wife, leaving Ciampa to nail Flamita with the Project Ciampa. On Ciampa’s word, Candice springs back to life, proving she was never actually hit by Horus, and the referee rolls back in the ring to see Flamita down, Ciampa covers him for the pinfall as Bandido and Rey Horus argue on the outside.
Winners: DIY by pinfall @ 14:27.
DIY celebrate in the ring after the match as Bandido helps Flamita out of the ring and heads up the ramp in anger, while an agitated Rey Horus follows behind, trying to plead his case. Once MexiBlood have reach the top of the stage, they are attacked by The Revival who beat down the 3-men, before sending Horus crashing off the stage to the concrete floor below. They then send Flamita head first in to the stage’s LED set up, before nailing Bandido with the Shatter Machine! Standing amongst the carnage, The Revival turn their sites to DIY, who wave them on, but The Revival don’t seem too keen on fighting them. They just point towards the ring while hurling inaudible insults before walking off backstage as we head to another commercial break.

We come back from commercial to the roar of the crowd as CM Punk is shown walking backstage with his signature cocky grin on his face after his historic return to professional wrestling last week. As he walks down the hallway, he is met by Daniel Bryan who looks very happy to see his old rival. Bryan welcomes Punk back to the wrestling world, telling him that he “Knew he couldn’t stay away”. Punk laughs stating he’s not sure if it was the fat cheque, the desire to return to the industry, or the need to drive his knee in to the face of Jim Cornette that brought him back, but he’s glad it did. Bryan tells Punk he heard that Punk challenged Dijakovic and Cobb to a tag match next week, before remarking that he’s surprised Punk’s found someone to partner with so soon after returning to the company. Punk laughs, saying that he was actually hoping that Bryan would be his partner so he could get some revenge on them for what happened last week. Bryan tells Punk he’s honored, but no. Punk can’t believe it! Bryan says he told everyone last week he was done with Cornette and Dijakovic after their match and regardless of what happened, he’s sticking to his word. Punk laughs and accusing Bryan of ribbing him, but Bryan confirms his decision before wishing Punk luck next week and walking off, leaving a confused CM Punk to stand alone in the hallway.
We get a graphic saying WCW Women’s Champion Tessa Blanchard will be on Nitro next week as she finds out who her opponent will be at WW3.
Match #3: Singles Match
David Arquette (w/ RJ City) vs. The Miz
JR and Tony Schiavone jokingly refer to this match as a “Battle of Hollywood Stars in a match you won’t find anywhere else but in WCW”. Miz is not happy as he enters this match after clearly demanding some real competition and unfortunately for Arquette, Miz takes that frustration out on him, beating the former movie star around the ring for close to 5 minutes before putting him away with a Skull Crushing Finale for the 3-count.
Winner: The Miz by pinfall @ 4:48.
Immediately after the bell, Miz sends Arquette to the floor before demanding a microphone from Justin Roberts and once again proceeding to cry injustice about the quality of opponents he’s been getting in WCW. Miz reminds everyone that he demanded a better opponent for this week, but instead what he got was significantly worse. In a fit of rage, Miz question’s WCW abilities to make exciting matches and wonders if it may be time already to opt out of his WCW contract in search of a better opportunity elsewhere.
Before Miz can say anymore, the music of Killer Kross plays from the arena speakers, and out comes Kross, flanked by Scarlett Bordeaux as they make their way to the ring to a mixed reaction from the crowd. Once in the ring, Miz, unsure of what to do, asks Kross who the hell he thinks he is, but before he can finish his sentence, Kross grabs Miz and plants him to the ground with a Doomsday Saito. With Miz down and in pain, Kross and Scarlett celebrate their returns as JR wonders if The Miz just bit off more than he can chew.

Main Event: Singles Match
WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Jon Moxley vs. Nick Aldis ©
Leave it to WCW to provide us with a PPV quality bout in only their 2nd live weekly television broadcast! Though we all know they won’t be able to keep giving these matches away for free if they expect to sell PPV’s, this was one to sit back and enjoy. Aldis is out alone to the surprise of just about everyone, and Moxley looks to have used his time away from the ring to improve his overall shape as he’s looking great tonight. Both men really bring it to each other in the early stages of this match as Aldis though faking confidence, looks worried he may indeed lose his title tonight. Mox’s hardnosed and reckless style makes it hard for Aldis to keep up at times, and his unpredictable movements allowed him to get in quite a bit of early offense on the defending Champion, until an eye poke that was seemingly missed by the referee, allows Aldis to regain control of the match, where he finally gets the opportunity to show off his technical prowess. A near fall from Aldis keeps the fans on their feet as they try to rally Moxley in this match. Mox does manages to regain control after Aldis takes a little too long playing to the jeers of the crowd, and eat a flurry of lighting fast right hands, staggering him back. The end of the match comes after a failed MDD attempt from Aldis, allows Moxley to counter in to a Paradigm Shift, but before Moxley can execute the move, Ciampa and Gargano appear from the crowd and attack Moxley, causing the referee to wave this match off due to the outside interference.
Winner: Jon Moxley by Disqualification @ 18:27, Nick Aldis retains the WCW Championship.
The 3 men continue to beat down on Moxley who tries desperately to fight back until finally, The Young Bucks come charging down to the ring for the save! Matt and Nick Jackson both go after Gargano and Ciampa, but the 3 members of The Superior quickly leave the ring, retreating up the ramp before The Bucks could get their hands on them. As Aldis backs up the entrance ramp, holding his WCW World Championship high in the air and celebrating with his stablemates, WCW President Eric Bsichoff appears on the titantron.
Bischoff congratulates Nick Aldis on once again managing to weasel his way out of a fair title defense before mentioning that he’s come to a decision on Nick Aldis’ opponent for World War 3. Bischoff tells Aldis that due to some recent events that have expanded the WCW title picture much larger than he’d anticipated, he’s decided that Aldis will not be needing to defend his Championship at the PPV, and instead will be safe from defending his title until December’s Starcade PPV! Aldis is ecstatic at the news, but Bischoff laughs off his reaction. Bischoff then announces that he’s decided to bring back the WW3 match at this year’s World War 3 PPV! 3 Rings, 20 Superstars in each ring and the last man standing will get the opportunity to face Nick Aldis at Starcade for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship! Bischoff then announces that he’s officially entered every male superstar on the WCW roster in the match, including both Ciampa and Gargano which causes Aldis to show some worry as both members of DIY look intrigued by the idea of being Aldis’ next challenger. Next up, Bischoff announces in order to fill the remaining spots in the match, he has opened up 15 spots for anyone not in WCW, meaning we are sure to see some surprises in the match. Following Bischoff’s major announcement, WCW Nitro comes to a close with Nick Aldis looking on in concern and clenching his WCW Championship as Gargano and Ciampa stare at him intently, while Moxley and The Young Bucks look on in excitement
